Post Lockdown – What’s Next?

Post Lockdown – What's next?

A Roller-Coaster

What a roller-coaster the past 18 months have been! The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on everyone. As well as the devastating first-hand effects of the virus, and the negative repercussions on so many businesses (particularly in the hair and beauty sector) lockdowns and social distancing have had a massive impact on everyone’s physical and emotional wellbeing too.

Still being impacted by Test and Trace notifications, many salons are being forced to close again temporarily, even after the country has officially re-opened for business and life has returned to some strange semblance of normality.

If the last 18 months have taught us anything, we’ve had to learn that in every aspect of life we have to be flexible, resilient, and adaptive, but we know how hard this can be.

With that in mind, we’ve been looking at how you, and your salon can thrive after lockdown.

The good news is that more than half of Brits say they’re most loyal to their favourite hairdressers over any other business, according to new research so hopefully old clients are coming back where they belong – to your salon. But we can’t sit back and relax just yet.

In Your Salon

Carry on building trust with your clients. Be open and honest, especially if you need to change things or move appointments around. Keep them informed throughout.

Communication is so important with everyone. Make sure your clients know about the new cancellation policy, but also that your staff know which safety gear they should be wearing and when. And keep that communication a two-way street.

Keep up to date – make sure that you stay on top of recommend hygiene and safety procedures. They have changed so many times and new recommendations are still coming out regularly.

Having said that – don’t be afraid to change the rules. Think about flexibility. Maybe that’s staying open later one night of the week or doing a home visit to make someone feel more comfortable. One salon we read about in London was able to do treatments in their salon courtyard by installing a gazebo in case the weather changed! Take flexible working to a whole new level.

For Your Business

Get online – Lots of new businesses, workers, shopping and more have gone online during the pandemic and a whole new generation have discovered digital communication while in lockdown. Make sure you are up to date with your social media and online marketing so that people can find, and appreciate, your salon.

Shine Business - Hair and Beauty Products

Find an online community of like-minded people, (just as an example Shine Salon Success) and use it to connect with other industry professionals, get valuable marketing tips and keep up to date with news. Groups like ours are there to make you and your business feel supported, especially during the difficult times.

Lastly, look after YOU. We can’t say this enough. We don’t know exactly what’s around the corner but if you aren’t at 100% then your business can’t be either.  We’ll be sharing lots of tips in the coming weeks on our social media about this.

It’s been a long and hard road through the pandemic. Although we’re far from out of the woods yet, things are beginning to change for the better and there are lots of positives to come.
