5 New Instagram Features You Have to Try

Instagram is an amazing platform for showcasing your salon. It’s particularly useful for hair and beauty businesses, as you can display gorgeous pictures of your creations and products on the grid, and also talk about techniques and how-to videos in Reels and in Stories. It’s perfect for those before and after pictures of your clients’ treatments, and for showcasing new products that you have in stock to sell in your salon.

Instagram has recently announced that Instagram Stories are now the main way that we’re keeping up with our favourite people and brands, and they’ve brought out a host of new features for us to play with.

Here’s a run-down of a few of our favourites:

1. Instagram link on All Stories

Instagram recently got rid of the swipe-up feature (only available to accounts with more than 10,000 followers) and added the ability for us all to add a link sticker. Instagram Stories only stay up for 24 hours but adding a link to your story is a really great way to direct people to a specific product, page, or website, boosting organic engagement, and making it easier for your followers to access the content you want to share.

2. Reels Remix

Have you ever looked at someone’s Reels and thought, I’d like to comment on that, or try it, or thought you could make it better? Well, now you can.

Launched in April 2021, this feature now gives you the ability to add your reel next to someone else’s. It’s great because the other user is notified of the remix and is likely to share it with their followers, expanding your reach and theirs. Karaoke duet anyone?

3. 'Add Yours' Sticker

This is a great new feature for all beauty businesses. It essentially allows users to respond to other users’ Stories with their own pictures following a prompt or a certain topic theme. Here’s our example for our followers to share their firework pictures. On your story, you might add the sticker asking your viewers to share their hairstyles, or beauty tips (or failures?).

4. Stories Caption Stickers

Also in April 2021, caption stickers for stories were introduced, which automatically turns what you say into text. Just tap on Stickers and search for captions to have this added. 40% of watchers on Instagram watch with the sound off so using this feature is a great opportunity to capture that audience, plus it makes your content more accessible.

5. Collab

Collab was rolled out by Instagram in October. It enables users to collaborate on feed posts and reels together. You can send collaboration invites to other Instagram users and create feed posts and reels mutually. The posts will appear in both creators’ Instagram feeds and will share the exact views, like count and comment thread. Another great opportunity to make new content with your staff, or another salon owner to improve both of your reach and impressions.

The Instagram algorithm oversees who sees your Stories based on your previous behaviour on the platform. It will try and learn and adapt to your habits, so if you don’t want some profiles to appear first on your feed, you could try and adjust it by interacting with them less frequently.

Embrace the changes coming across social media, but it’s so easy to get overwhelmed by them all as they seem to come so quickly. Don’t feel you have to use everything all at once. Not every feature will fit what you are trying to achieve with your Salon so just keep an eye on your insights to see what works best for you and your business.
